Borrowed Geometry as a Basis for Design.
This unit proposes a virtual architecture ‘d’objet trouvé’, created from undisguised but repurposed elements, or found objects. Digital geometries not normally considered viable architectural components, because they are perceived to already serve different functions, are open for reinterpretation. The likes of crumbling columns, natural topographies and video-game assets are all geometries to be borrowed, manipulated, spliced, scaled, sculpted and remixed in virtual reality. By exploiting the transformative language of the internet and applying it to architectural thought, students will play with the limits of perception.
Members of this unit will explore shifting concepts of authorship. A survey informed by a conceptual and deconstructive attitude will be conducted in order to create a virtual site. Students will then weave together geometries borrowed from both physical and digital space with micro-narratives to define and sculpt new architectural forms, stories, functions, and hierarchies. Proposals may respond to their context or take form metaphorically as an architectural statement.
